Mobile VoIP usage is in the midst of substantial growth says reports. NPD In-Stat state that people using their mobile phones to make VoIP (IP Telephony) calls over wifi has risen from 9 million in 2010 to 29 million by the end of 2011 - a massive increase of 222% in 12 months.
This increase is down to three significant factors; the proliferation and the connectivity of smartphones such as iPhones, Androids and Blackberry, the greater penetration of wifi, but most importantly the growing breadth of offerings of telephone providers such as Voicenet Solutions.
The mobile VoIP market technology has been available for some time, it is with the relatively recent advancement of the telephone hardware that has taken mobile VoIP into the mainstream and caught up with the telephony offering. Mobile VoIP also has many benefits for users, allowing customers to keep their bills down while also connecting to a landline number one one handset. Linking a landline number to the mobile phone is called Fixed Mobile Convergence or FMC.
The report, which took its data from OS Application users, highlighted that Western Europe is the leader in mobile VoIP usage and that by the year 2015, all the revenue that is linked with mobile VoIP usage will go up exponentially crossing more than $4 billion in 2015.
"While VoIP is a well-defined market, mobile VoIP is still in its infancy, with most offerings only being developed over the past several years, and because it's in its nascent stage, there are significant opportunities for companies to develop the market," said Amy Cravens, senior analyst.
