£100 Million Government scheme will benefit IP Telephony users

Users of IP Telephony communications, business VoIP solutions and other IP devices could benefit from a new government scheme offered to eight of the largest UK cities.

The scheme, launched by The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills has will allow eight British cities to claim a share of a £100 million kitty to carry out broadband upgrades, and thus benefit businesses data usage.

The move that was announced in Leeds earlier in December by the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, will allow cities who secure finance the ability to invest in super-fast broadband, data-networks and accessible wifi connections.

Cities that secure finance will be able to invest in super-fast broadband, Wi-Fi connections and information-building activities. The eight cities targeted are Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham, Manchester and Sheffield. Individual deals with each city are scheduled to be agreed before the Budget in 2012.

Such infrastructure investment will greatly aid businesses who are using VoIP solutions (including hosted VoIP) both in offices and via mobile handsets.

"We need our cities to be economic, social and cultural magnets – places people aspire to live. Firstly, cities will have greater freedom to invest in growth. Secondly, [they will have] power over transport, housing, broadband," Mr Clegg stated.
